The stereotype and stigma of the “starving artist” caricature has long plagued young and emerging artists. There is a certain level of truth in the cliché: artists are passionately driven to create, often finding their imaginations and inspirations far exceeding their means. The current financial crisis has made the public aware of the impact money has on our ability to pursue our dreams and secure our futures. In the midst of the current economic downturn, this exhibition calls attention to artists who have thrived so long without financial stability.
Carmen Hermo is an emerging curator out of Jersey City. Recession Expression is her solo curatorial debut. Currently a cataloger and researcher at the Whitney Museum of American Art, Carmen has previously worked for the Museum of Modern Art, El Museo del Barrio, and the Newark Museum.
