Germinal by Hector Canonge opens Saturday, June 13th, 2009 with a free public reception from 6-8pm at City Without Walls (cWOW), 6 Crawford Street, Newark, NJ 07102. The exhibition is free and open to the public Thursdays - Saturdays 12-6pm through August 5, 2009. Directions

Newark New Media, cWOW’s artist residency and apprenticeship program, presents the premiere of Germinal, Hector Canonge’s exploration of the digital codification of seeds and their transformation into commercial food products. Based on scientific data and the integration of digital video, barcode technology, and installation art, the project encourages visitors to be active participants in the exploration of this issue. The interactive installation is on display in cWOW’s New Media Project Room.

Newark New Media provides a leading new media artist with a studio, stipend, and a team of high school students to be trained in cutting-edge technology and contemporary art. Apprentice artists included: Rakim Alexander, Edgar Arauz, Daishon Clanton, Dillion Collins, Tania Sousa, and Wahedaa Nasar. Newark New Media is a collaboration of cWOW, Gallery Aferro, Newark Public Schools, and New Jersey City University, supported in part with funding from Newark Public Schools.

Newark New Media artist in residence Hector Canonge is a New York-based filmmaker and new media artist whose work has exhibited at the Atlantic Center for the Arts (New Smyrna Beach, FL), Queens Museum of Art, Jersey City Museum, Paul Robeson Galleries (Rutgers Newark) and other museums and galleries throughout the world. Hector has received many awards, including a residency with the Bronx Museum of the Arts AIM Program and a Rockefeller Fellowship in New Media Arts. He has taught and lectured extensively, including at The New School, City College of New York, New York City College of Technology, the Bronx River Art Center and elsewhere. He earned his MFA from Hunter College and BBA from Baruch College.
