Who
can submit a proposal to curate a show?
Anyone. And we often work with first-time curators whom we help through
the process. (Important: see italicized note in next item, concerning
"Invitational" exhibitions).
Can artist-curators include their own work in a proposal? Yes.
We have found that these curators often have a better grasp of the
exhibition's theme and a greater commitment to the show. Our main
concern is the quality of the idea and the work being proposed. Each
show must have a curator who is solely responsible for selecting all
the artworks: we do not favor "Invitational" exhibitions
whereby each participating artist decides what they will exhibit.
How do I submit a proposal? The process is quite easy:
1. Send us a simple written statement of your idea.
2. Make an appointment to examine our slide file (required
of all curators). You don't have to choose from it, but you must look
at each current artist member's work (takes about 2-3 hours).
3. Submit a final proposal with slides. We then place it in
the pool from which we select shows for the calendar. It will remain
under active consideration until or unless it is scheduled or returned
by CWW, or withdrawn by the curator.
Are curators paid? Generally, no. We occasionally receive funding
for a specific show which includes a curating stipend, but we normally
must rely on volunteer artist/curators who benefit by being included
in the exhibition themselves as well as being prominently mentioned
in all promotional materials.
Will my show be reviewed by the press? Very likely. CWW has
an outstanding record of generating press.
What are the curator's responsibilities? The curator selects
all the artists and artworks, making sure each is available for exhibition,
and submits slides of each work with title, media, size and price
(if for sale). If you wish, you may offer text and design ideas for
the catalogue, announcement cards and installation though these are
not usually required unless specifically requested by CWW. The gallery
and its Director retain final approval of all aspects of the exhibition
including promotional materials and installations.
Who decides if a show will appear at CWW? The Exhibition Committee
(which meets quarterly; occasionally monthly) examines proposals to
determine if they comply with our written Exhibition Policy (see next
page). The gallery Director then decides which of these proposals
will be included in the calendar.
How many shows does CWW present yearly? 7-10 on-site shows
plus traveling exhibitions. We have 3 annual shows (New Members, ArtReach
& Metro Show) and by policy try to keep two slots open in each
subsequent 12 month period so that artists do not face a fully-booked
year of membership.
When
are proposals accepted? Anytime. |
