A LETTER FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Dear Friends,

This past year, City Without Walls created thirteen original exhibitions, involving over one-hundred-thirty artists and two dozen events at locations throughout the metro region. Here's just a sample of recent activities:

  • Working with a half-dozen high school students, Newark New Media artist Heidi Boisvert created animations for a ground-breaking non-violent video game about human rights;
  • The New York Times called us "one of the most socially engaged and dynamic art spaces in the state," and The Jersey Journal called our efforts "visionary";
  • In her essay for Close to the Edge, which travels to Danny Simmons' Corridor Gallery later in 2008, art historian Jennifer Borum asked a public panel: "are all events promoting the work of black self-taught artists examples of exploitation?" (the discussion was intense!);
  • The Star Ledger called our high-school mentoring program a "hallowed Newark tradition," and said our technology initiatives should should be “music to an artist’s ear";
  • 1800FRAMES|Take4, our short-form video program, was featured at the DUMBO Art Under the Bridge Festival in September;
  • The Partnership in Philanthropy awarded us its first-ever Prize for Publicity Excellence for our work promoting artists and important art programs;
  • Our 25th anniversary Metro Show headlined our first gala event and has been travelling throughout the state of New Jersey in the months since.
