(Newark, NJ, September 26, 2016) – City Without Wall’s (cWOW) Board of Trustees is proud to welcome our new Executive Director, Fayemi Shakur.
Ms. Shakur has been working in Newark and the New York/New Jersey region for close to twenty years and brings a wealth of knowledge and passion to this leadership role. Starting on, September 26, 2016, she joins us after spending four years as the Marketing and Public Program Manager for Aljira, a Center for Contemporary Art. Ms. Shakur has included writing, journalism, music, poetry, art consulting, public programming, social justice work, and community service as part of her creative social practice. She is one of the co-founders of the Lincoln Park Music Festival, an annual community celebration hosted just one block away from the cWOW gallery.
Her writing has been featured in The New York Times, The International Review of African American Art, Nueva Luz Photographic Journal, and HYCIDE magazine. Ms. Shakur also teaches yoga and meditation in communities affected by trauma.
“We are thrilled that Fayemi is joining our organization at this seminal moment in our organization’s history,” says Michael Wyetzner, Board Chair. “Ms. Shakur has a proven track record of organizing events that directly engage and partner with the Newark community. I could not think of a better person to lead cWOW into its next chapter.”
“City Without Walls is New Jersey’s oldest not-for-profit alternative art space and a treasured institution in our city. I am sincerely honored and excited to lead City Without Walls into the future. My goals include strengthening the organization’s exhibitions and programs, continuing public engagement of local residents and the region in this work, and serving as an advocate for the Arts to demonstrate the meaningful place artists have in our lives and the world,” states Shakur.
City Without Wall’s Board of Trustees would like to thank Malik Whitaker who has served as Interim Director for the past four months. Mr. Whitaker will become the Gallery Manager, where he will be responsible for gallery installations, community outreach, and assisting Ms. Shakur with public events.
